Generally speaking 3 months before the month of your 65th birthday.
Individuals that are turning 65 or those with certain disabilities can go to the Social Security website, ssa.gov, and use the “Apply for Medicare Only” link.
You should always compare what your out of pocket costs will be with Medicare compared to what your out of pocket costs are with your employer coverage.
You may also have to consider if your spouse is under 65 and on your employer coverage. Will they lose coverage? Yes, they probably would. In this case the spouse may be looking at healthcare.gov for
an individual plan.
Some higher income individuals may choose not to go on Medicare due to an increase in the Part B premium. This is called IRMAA or
Income Related Monthly Adjusted Amount.
There are costs associated with Medicare, nothing is ever free. Medicare is similar to employer coverage plan in the sense that it covers 80% and leaves 20% for you.
Part A is your in-patient hospital coverage. It generally does not have a monthly premium based on working 40 quarters in your lifetime.
Part B is your medical coverage. Dr visits, ER, Urgent care, medical appliances, ambulance, xrays, diagnostics, labs. Etc. Part B has a monthly premium. The standard income level which determines your premium changes every year. Higher income earners, based on income from 2 years prior tax returns, pay more. Part B has an annual deductible as well. Currently it is around $200+.
Medicare Prescription Drug Plans have a monthly premium which will change over the course of time along with Rx drug copays and possibly a Rx drug deductible.
Medicare Supplement Plans sometimes called Medigap plans have a monthly premium which will increase over the course of time
There are many factors that come into play here including Income/Affordability, Health, Guaranteed Issue windows and age.
What is right for you has nothing to do with what is right for your neighbors, friends and family. Medicare Supplements and Rx Drug Plans have a monthly premium which can increase over time. Medicare Supplements generally speaking pick up some or all of the 20% you are required to pay. Medicare Advantage Plans often have little to no monthly premium but have copays with an out-of-pocket max. Depending on the state.
